Aromatic Pepper Rice

Shane and I have become a little bored and uninspired by food recently, we blame the heat and lack of desire to stand in over the stove in this weather.

Being someone who loves to both cook and eat I have been determined to get out of this phase!

I've been scrolling through our Instagram page and spending my spare time just reading through recipe books, not reading to meal plan, just reading to relax and inspire. My boss has also recently lent me one of her slimming world cook books and in it we found a recipe for Aromatic Pepper Rice with Tiger Prawns. Oh My God, it was just the kick up the backside my taste buds needed to get the creative juices flowing again.

As I was eating the meal, and picking out all the different spices we had one by one added to the pan, I was one by one thinking of ways to tweak this dish.

The very next day we recreated the dish with our own stamp. We swapped out the prawns for lamb (our favourtie meat) and tweaked the spices to suit accordingly.

For two people;
Ingredients
  • Low calorie cooking spray (I like coconut spray)
  • 1/2 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cardamon pods lightly crushed
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp hot curry powder
  • 1 star anise (snapped in two, or two small ones)
  • 2 chillies
  • 2 small cinnamon sticks
  • 140g dried basmati rice
  • 225ml boiling lamb or vegetable stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 150g green beans, trimmed and halved
  • 200g mild peppadew peppers, drained and roughly chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 hard boiled eggs
  • 200g diced lamb

  • First thing first, which I always forget, hard boil two eggs, and set aside to cool.
  • Spray a medium sized frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat, once the pan has heated up add the lamb, 1 cardamon pod, 1/4 tsp on hot curry powder, 1/2 the star anise, 1 whole or diced chilies (if you leave it whole you can take it out at the end) and 1 cinnamon stick. Once the meat has brown add enough of the stock to cover the base of the pan, just enough to keep the lamb from going dry -approx 2 tbsp and cook on a low heat stirring occasional.
  • Whilst the lamb is cooking, spray a wide heavy based lidded sauce pan or frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat, add the onion and cook for five minutes or until soft. Then add the remaining cardamon pod, turmeric, curry powder, star anise, cinnamon stick and chili then cook for 1 minute. Don't forget to keep an eye on the lamb!
  • Stir the rice into the onions and spices and stir for one minute to coat with the spices, add the stock bay leaves, green beans and peppadew peppers and season to taste. Bring to the boil over a high heat, stir once and then cover and cook over a low heat for 12 minutes.
  • By this point your lamb should be cooked and you can take off the heat and leave in the pan for the meantime.
  • Peel and roughly chop, or halved, your boiled eggs.
  • Once the 12 minutes is up for your rice pan, uncover the rice and discard of the bay leaves, star anise, cinnamon stick, chilli and cardamon - if you can find them! No worries if not, just remember not to eat them if you see them on your plate, they have interesting textures! Add the lamb to the dish then re cover for 3-4 minutes or until the lamb is heated through (hopefully it won't have cooled too much!).
  • After you have plated up the rice mixture place you egg halves, or scatter your chopped pieces over the top. Alternatively, if you would like these warmed through you can add them with the lamb to the rice pan.

This dish does require mutli tasking, and is much easier as a two man job. There are lots of ingredients involved, but ones i'll always have in my pantry and love to cook with. Although this is quite a light dish and acceptable as a summer meal in my eyes, it also bring a lovely warming smell to the house which would suit any slightly cold autumn evening.

I was so excited for the lamb dish it didn't occurred to me to take a photo, but here's one of the original prawn dish we did.

Gooey Chocolate Bites

This coming Friday will be my cousins wedding, Matt is the first of the Morgan grandchildren to marry so as you can imagine the whole family is super excited.

Matt's gorgeous bride is a celiac which I imagine has proven wedding cake shopping a little difficult! So there was no surprise that in with the wedding invites was a little hand written note announcing the great celiac bake off. All guest have been invited to bring a gluten free cake to share with the wedding party. Of course I jumped at the chance to start researching appropriate recipes to trial and then present. I've always found in the past when I have catered for gluten free the end products are very dry and I was determined to avoid this when I set out on this creative journey.

After months of research I settled on two recipes, one being from a book - sweet potato brownies and another being an amalgamation of different ideas and processes I had picked up throughout my research - gooey chocolate bites.

I decided to bake the gooey chocolate bites today and have straight away decided I do not need to make sweet potato brownies to compare. The bites are very rich and very moist! There we go, I said it! They are moist.

In my "brain prep" to making these goodies I decided I would try using a new measurement method which has become increasingly popular in the UK recently. I purchased some cup measuring spoons from sainsburys and found them just as successful as using scales. So now I am set to try some new adventurous cup recipes. Mean time, here is my first cup measuring success story.

Ingredients for circa 30 bites.
Chocolate bites
  • 1 x 80g bar doisy and dam date and pink himalayan salt
  • 2 tblsp coconut oil
  • 2 tblsp ground flax seeds
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup ground almonds
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup raw cacao powder
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/2 cup goji berries
  • 1 orange - grated zest only
  • 1/2 cup coconut yoghurt
Frosting:
  • 40g bar doisy and dam crunchy almond butter - melted
  • 1 cup dairy free spread
  • 1 tblsp raw cacao powder
  • 1-2 tblsp maple syrup
Method
  • Preheat your oven to 170 Fan / 190 C / 375 F / Gas 6 and line a 24cm x 18cm (9 x 7 inch) baking tray with parchment, covering the base and sides
  • Break the chocolate into chunks and melt along with the coconut oil in a microwave or over a bain-marie (a small dish set over a barely simmering pan of water). I used a microwave as it is quicker.
  • While that's melting mix the ground flax seeds with 5 tblsp water in a mug and set aside - this creates the binding agent instead of using eggs
  • Next put the oats into a food processor or blender and whizz until you have a fairly fine flour - albeit mine was more like breadcrumbs which gave the bite some texture
  • Tip the ground oats into a large bowl along with the ground almonds, baking powder, cacao powder, coconut sugar, goji berries and orange zest.  Stir until well mixed
  • Stir in the melted chocolate mixture, the coconut yoghurt and the flax egg and mix everything together lightly but thoroughly
  • Pour into your prepared tray and bake for 30 minutes.  Don't worry if it seems quite soft, it will firm up as it cools
  • Cool completely before spreading over the frosting - I mean cool completely, next time I am going to frost the morning after!
  • To make the frosting simply whisk or beat together the dairy free spread, melted chocolate, raw cacao powder and maple syrup - just like butter icing
  • Thickly spread the frosting over the cooled bake, pushing it out to the edges until the brownie is completely covered - I've left the brownie in the tin up to this point. Think about what ratio of bake to frosting you want, as too much may not present well with your taste buds
  • Use the baking paper to lift the bake out of the tray then cut into squares.  It's important to store these in the fridge in an airtight container to prevent the frosting from melting away.
Upon reflection, these gooey bites are very rich, very chocolaty, took about 40 minutes of ingredient prep, and I used nearly every utensil in the kitchen! They also were not cheap to produce, the ingredients on the list are not my staple pantry ingredients, and certainly are not commonly found on the shelves at Aldi!

On the other hand they are for a very special occasion, they are gluten free and can easily be made dairy free and vegan depending on the chocolate choice, and they also contain very little processed sugars which suits my sister in laws digestive system.

I will be making these bites again for the wedding, however post wedding I think I will need another special occasion to want to make these for. I enjoyed experimenting with the bake, it has been a while since I made something adventurous, and I've very much enjoyed sampling the outcome, but for me baking is about relaxing, indulging in an activity which does not require much thinking. Whereas these bites used many different methods and a lot of brain power!

Sometimes you just cannot beat the all in one method!

Happy baking

My attempt at healthy eating ...

I am so hungry right now. Shane has been working late this week as they are super busy. Argo, I have to wait for tea!

...So to help ease my hungry I thought I would recap on what I ate yesterday, hmmmm yuumy.

We always try and eat healthy, with the recommended amounts of fats, carbs and protein, and luckily I love vegetables so different vitamins is not an issues. Our issue is portion size, we're piggy! When you make yummy food it's hard to only eat a small amount of it.

Yesterday we had sausages, with roast vegetables, baked sweet potato and bulgar wheat with quinoa.

I started it off by chopping courgettes, onion, carrots, baby sweetcorn, long stem broccoli and mushrooms. I mixed them with sunflower oil, salt & pepper and added some fresh sage and thyme, and good two handfuls of. I roasted these in the over at 190°c for half an hour.

For the sausages I have a roasting rack that i placed on top of the veggies, and I placed the sausages on top and cooked these for the same amount of time. I pricked the sausages first and this way the juices poor over the roast veg and gives them some more flavour. It also saves me from needing to turn the sausages half way through. For the baked sweet potato, I just wrapped it in foil and cooked it for an hour, at 190°c

The bulgar wheat and quinoa are new to me, I cooked 75 grams in 200 ml of water (this was for two of us) but to give it extra flavour I added a stock cube to the water, Whereas another option was to cook it plain and add sweet chili sauce afterwards, as sweet chili sauce also works well with the sweet potato, and feta cheese.

Quick, simple and full of flavour!!

Here's a link to the roasting rack I have :) it's one of my kitchen essentials.

My Roast Chicken Risotto Leftovers

After we got back from Barcelona neither of us had any food inspirations, the weather was still quite hot and we didn't have much of an apatite. But then finally Shane decided we would have Roast Chicken. We don't usually have roast dinners as I normally end up making far to much so we save it for when we have family round.

So I decided if we were going to have a roast, I was making the most of it and buying a whole chicken. I stuffed it with thyme, sage, basil and lemon and did most of the trimmings to go with it, it was amazing and worth all the effort, although I find roast dinners not as hard as some dishes, I think I'm just so used to making them now.

But, obviously between the two of us we couldn't eat a whole chicken, so we decided on using the left overs for curry and risotto.

When I lived with my parents, brother & his girlfriend (they're renovating their current uninhabitable house) there was always plenty of food in the pantry, as you could nether guarantee who would be in for tea, lunch or even breakfast! So always plenty of food leftover to just throw meals together in order to prevent waste. But with the two of us now it's easier to only buy what we need, and therefore we don't get the opportunity to just create something.

For the risotto, I used my "just throw it all in" approach. Which to this day, surprisingly, has not let me down!

Ingredients - for two slightly piggy portions (can be served with a side salad and saving some of the risotto for lunch the next day)

  • Lurpack or olive oil 1 tablespoon
  • Onion 1/2 medium
  • Green pepper 1/4 or Celery 1/2 Stick
  • Mushrooms Small handful
  • Pancetta 100g
  • Carrots 1/2 medium
  • Butternut squash 250g
  • Stock Veg or Chicken 1 Litre
  • White wine small wine glass
  • Risotto Rice 1/2 cup
  • Left over roast Chicken 2 handfuls
  • Grated Parmesan 1 handful
Method

Where to begin?

I started by roasting the butternut squash (which I had brought the tesco frozen chopped bag) in a preheated oven at 200°C/Fan 180°C, Gas 6  on a roasting tray with some oil and salt and pepper for 25 minutes. The butternut squash was finished before the the risotto was ready for it so I left it on the side, don't worry if it cools down as it will heat back up in the risotto, but you don't want to put it in too early as it'll turn to mush. Well, by all means put it in early, as it is an easy way of hiding vegetables!

For the main body of the risotto, I started by heating the oil in a large saucepan, ideally i would use lurpack but I only had olive oil. Once that is heated up, bout 2 mins on a medium heat, add the onion, green pepper or celery, mushrooms, and pancetta and carrots all cubed into small pieces as this way they cook quicker. Fry until the pancetta is browned, and the veggies are softened and starting to go slightly golden. Then add in the rice and mix so it is coated in the oil and juices. Once the rice is coated, add the white wine and a ladle of stock. Once the liquid has been absorbed add another ladle and so on for roughly 15 mins, or until the rice is soft but with a bite. Hopefully that makes sense! For me I keep tasting the rice to see whens it cooked. once the rice is cooked, add the left over chicken, we had diced breast meat, and the butternut squash and heat through for about 5 minutes. Once warmed, turn the heat off and stir in the grated parmesen.
In total the dish takes about half an hour to 45 mins to cook. Risotto is not the easiest dish out there, and does take a lot of practice, for me I only really started to get in right when I moved out and my dad wasn't there to take over when I couldn't get the rice perfect. But don't give up! Once you get the skills perfected you'll never look back and can throw all sorts in so long as you have the key ingredients, rice, onion, celery or green pepper, stock and parmesan.
I added a little to  much stock to mine, so it ended up a little too wet, but was still yummy.

Our first holiday abroad

As a holiday maker I am a little timid. As a kid my family always did staycations mostly around Wales and the West coast, and every few years we would be joined by aunts, uncles, cousins & grandparents.

These holidays form some of my favourite childhood memories, I loved my childhood holidaying in England, and I'm happy to keep it that way :). I'm such a home bird and I love being close to my family. and after all if it's not broke, why fix it?

Shane on the other hand, most of his childhood holidays were abroad, and from that, he caught the travel bug! He was really hoping we could go abroad last year. I thought if I controlled the situation and did all the research and booked the trip myself it would be fine, I looked at a few places, mostly Portugal but I could never quite bring myself to press the "book" button. I was too scared off all the many but unlikely outcomes of the trip! So eventually Shane spent half an hour on google and booked us a long weekend trip to Barcelona.

The trip was amazing, and everything went really well. We flew from Birmingham airport and it was really easy to navigate around, we had booked private transfers also from the airport to the hotel to try and minimise any waiting around and reason for me to worry.  Which I am so glad we did, I get a little travel sick too, well a lot travel sick so I use travel bands and travel tablets, but still needed to get to the hotel to lie my head down and keep it still for half an hour! The hotel had a queen sized bed which made that post travel nap so comfy!

Once my head was re balanced on the ground and the nausea had gone we took our first little adventure into Barcelona. We were staying on Rambla del Raval at the Barcelo Raval hotel. A modern cosmopolitan hotel, which is in the heart of the Gothic quarters old working district. We decided to head to La Rambla the main strip within Barcelona. We started from Columbus column and up towards the Hard Rock Cafe where we had our evening meal and a few cocktails. The food was yummy but I was really excited for our first Spanish meal!

Through out our trip we tried a few different restaurants but I think my favouite meal was on our second from last day when we took a wonder round one of the markers where we found a sandwich stall, selling freshly made baguettes with Spanish meats and cheeses. We decided to walk down to Port Vell with them and ate them over looking the port. It was relaxed and just us, which made it so perfect. Well the two of us and a few Seagulls waiting for us to drop some food. I think this is my favourite memory of the trip :). We did lots of other exciting things too, too many to mention so I shall include the pictures below.

Fancy a trip to Barcelona yourself? Here are a few things I learnt from my adventures that may help;

  • Language While people in the city do speak Spanish, the city is bilingual and they also speak Catalan. However you will find a lot of the residents also speak English. We learnt a few words in Spanish as its only polite. These were Hello = Hola. Thank you = gracias. Two = dos. Please = Por favour. Water = agua.
  • Drinking Water Although it's fine to drink the tap water the hotels and restaurants do not offer it and the bottled water is quite expensive. For day trips we kept filling spare water bottles from the tap in our bathroom.
  • Alcohol A lot of the bars and restaurants we ordered cocktails at they did not measure the alcohol, one of my gin and tonics for example was 3 parts gin 1 part tonic. I definitely got my monies worth but also a little tipsy!
  • Currency The Euro is used throughout Spain, but they also except Travel cards, MasterCard and Visa's at most retailers and they have plenty of ATM's and money exchange shops. We took 700 euro's for 5 days which included spending at duty free. We booked a couple of tourist attractions online before we went also to save on taking cash just for attractions and helped us jump queues which was a bonus and we added drinks at the hotel bar to our room, so although we had paid for the hotel upfront we paid for a few things at the end on our visa card. Having previously let the bank know we were traveling.
  • Weather The Mediterranean climate mean that Barcelona is mild even in winter, while the majority of visitors enjoy the temperatures in between May and October. We went in May and it was cloudy and the temperature in the Celsius was in the early 20's which for us was perfect, but despite the cloud we still needed sun cream and came away with a nice colour.
  • Pick pockets As with any major cities Barcelona is notorious for many things, culture, architecture, beaches, But one other thing which you find everywhere is pick pockets. We did not encounter any but I still suggest, as with any city that you are vigilant of your belongings.
  • Getting around For the first couple of days we walked everywhere, about 5 miles a day! We walked until we couldn't walk anymore! We saw so much of the city this way, got lost a couple of times but always headed back the the tall Columbus Column or the Port, two big land marks which are well signed posted and easy to spot. Having these "points of interest" so to speak gave us the opportunity to get lost but always get back to where we needed.
  • Metro After we couldn't walk anymore we started using the Metro, it was supper easy to use and the ticket machines have an English option, we brought the ten trip ticket as it works out cheaper than individual tickets. The Metro was super easy to use, just as easy as the airport and it aloud us to go further and farther around the city, the furthest we went was to Camp Nou.

Our hotel had a 360 view of the city so at the end of the day it was quite inspiring to see how far we'd gone and planning where to go next!

One thing I would defiantly recommend doing, if you want to help others, is to head down the Port Vell at sun set. Here you will find hundreds! of migrants trying to make an honest living and better their lives. They are very happy with their new life in Spain and will be the first people to help you if you need it. They have clearly come from tougher lives and are extremely grateful for the opportunities they now have. They sell good quality souvenirs, and little over priced but you're not just paying for the product, but also for them to create a new safe lives for themselves. During the day you'll find them across the city and if you ever find yourselves lost, they will help you. They treat those as they would like to be treated themselves. Also if you're looking for a particular souvenir they will point you in the right direction to one of their pals apposed to forcing a sale on their products.
These are genuine honest people and I wish them all the luck in the world.

A new chapter.

Good morning bloggers.

I have been super busy recently, but that's all about to change. I've made some changes and I'm really looking forwards to them all fitting in place.

The biggest change I have made is the decision to resign as assistant cub leader. For 6 years I have been volunteering with the scout association, a fantastic organisation which provides thousands of opportunities for millions of youths. Although I have only ever been an assistant, I have ran 3 different sections ranging from ages 8 to 18. Which is very difficult for someone with no experience with children or scouting. I found it very stressful and this was not helped by the parents whom appeared to have very little amount of respect for me and my hard work despite what I gave up for their children. I felt alot of the time also some of the other leaders expected far too much of me as well.

So I have decided to take a break, which will more than likely be in definite, and now I have so much spare time.

I can blog again! I find blogging a great way to relax, which I really need right now.

I am in the process of buying my first house with Shane. We have been together now for 4.5 years and have decided to move in together, it's all very exciting but also very stressful! Moving is supposed to be one of the most stressful activities you can do in your life. That mixed with Cubs right now is a bit too much.

So, there we have 2 very big changes in my life, and what better way than to start a new chapter, for me :).

In lieu of the changes in my life I have made a bucket list, which I wish to share with you and you can follow me on this exciting journey. I have split my list into two, places I wish to go, and things I wish to do.

Spring time shopping time

I love spring, I love every season really, but I get bored by the end as I am impatient for the next season.

It's not quite spring yet, but I am going to count it anyway as I am tired of winter.

As it's not actually quite spring yet I have done a little spring time shopping to help it feel more like spring. Ultimately it won't really be spring until I don't have to scrape my car it the morning...grrr.

Here is what I have brought to get my all springy

A new blogging notebook. Floral :) I have soo much in here all ready, but having the time to transfer my scribbles into pretty little blog post is time consuming in my busy life. This does mean though I should always have something to blog about for my monthly post...yay. Paperchase, and I am not sure how much it cost as it was actually a very pre planned (and instructed) Christmas present from my Shane.

A new phone case...again floral. I kept dropping my phone recently (because I am so clumsy) and the one sided pink pokadot case was only protecting the back, I was so scared about damaging the screen that I got a fake leather flip case which I absolutely love!!!! It only cost £1.99 from amazon which is always a good start.

I like to get new bed sheets at this time of year, again floral, but on Christmas eve I treated myself to a Christmas set from Asda, half price at £6, and i'm still using them, even though they are wintery. On this basis I did not need any new bed sheets...what this space summer time!

My mum loves to garden, and our garden always smells lovely with fresh summer flower smells in the summer time. By now I am starting to miss that, despite my recent bouts of hayfever. To try and compensate for the lack of floral smells wafting around I purchased some new candles, these are both Yankee, the first is Cut Roses which also remind me of my late nanny. Her garden was always full of roses, and her bathroom had a rose scented air freshener which smelt exactly like this candle :).
The second candle I got was French Lavender, I love lavender, everything about it, I especially love baking with it as it is a unique and fresh ingredient. I have not lit this one yet but I am going to use it in the evening as lavender is good a making me drift to sleep. Although I will blow the candle out first!

Another way I like to bring in fresh smells is via bath time. Lush is definitely my favourite product for a good scented, bath product. My mum always says the bathroom smells "lush" after I've had a bath. This makes me chuckle as she doesn't put two and two together with the products.

I am still making my way through the Christmas and Valentines bubble bars and soap, so when I visited Lush at the weekend I picked up a three of my favourite bath bombs. These are twilight, avobath and sex bomb, I also picked up three which are new to me, tisty toasty, honey bee and blackberry bath bomb. Note how sex bomb never made it to the picture, this one is very relaxing.

I do like to read in the bath, and as I have just finished Girl Online (yes Girl Online 2 has been pre-order p.s Zoella, when is the film coming out?!) I have picked up a few books. These are To Kill a Mockingbird, Love Tanya and Glamour Guide. Slight range there. I do love a good read of all sorts of topics and books. I think it's really nice nowadays how reading is coming into fashion too.

Even writing about these things has me excited for daffodils, snow drops and baby lambs.

Face of the day.

Evenin'
I went back to work today after a lovely long break for the Christmas holidays. I did not want to get out of bed this morning, no way. But some how I did, after snoozing my alarm for 20 minutes.
Thanks to snoozing the alarm I went to work with minimal makeup.
So first thing I did when I got home, after fussing Henry and eating pizza, was apply some makeup, mainly because my new No7 2014 Illuminated Make-up Mirror arrived today :).
Here is how I created this "my every day when I do not have to get up at 7am" look.
♥I took off my day long eye makeup using my garnier micellar water.
♥ Applied my Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation in the colour vanilla. I like this foundation because it gives a good coverage with a thin coat, and leaves a lovely matte effect, but shines in the light like a natural glow, without looking oily. I am naturally quite pale so this foundation is a tad too dark for me, it's mainly for when I have a tan but with a jumper I can pull it off as you cannot see the rest of my skin. I used my Zoeva 102 silk finish to apply this, sometimes I use my Real Techniques beauty blender.

♥In doing this I created the ever so fashionable foundation lips, so I quickly cleared that up with my Lush bubblegum lip scrub, and then applied my Bodyshop lip butter, in I think, peach.

♥Then, I moved onto my eyes. For the eye shadow I used my Bourjois Smoky Eyes Eye Shadow Trio £7.99 in the colour 03 Mordoré Chic. I took the lightest shade all over my lid to my eyebrow, the medium shade on just my lid, and brought it down into the corner of my eye, and then I blended the darkest colour into my crease, and brought it down onto the lower lash line to create a smokey brown effect. Sound quick and easy? Meh, not quite.

The brushes I used are real techniques-base shadow brush, Zoeva 227 & Zoeva 231

♥I then took my L'Oreal Paris Volume Million Lashes Mascara £10.99 on my upper lashes, and a light coat on my lower lashes.

My mirror reflected in my eyes

♥To finish off I took my Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Shine Lacquer in the colour Charm Offensive £7.

My current skincare routine

I have recently been inundated with acne, I want to say suffering...but lets face it, there are far worse things I could be going through, so inundated. I would say my skin is normal to combination, and then there's my chin...

It is mostly around my chin area which I have recently learnt is a result of hormones. This link takes you to the dermalogica website and their face mapping page, a very interesting read.  www.dermalogica.co.uk/uk/yourskin

After a trip to the Doctors my acne prescription has now been change to a stronger tablet. (Lymecycline - with most ance tablets you cannot exfoliate but with these I have to be really careful with eyebrow waxing too as they thin the skin, well, any face waxing).

The tablets started to help, a massive amount at first, so I decided to treat myself to a facial at my local beauty salon. They are all demalogica trained beautician and really know a thing or two when it comes to skin care. It was Sam, the lady who did my facial who warned me about waxing and the reasons why surrounding my new tablets.

I wanted the facial to really clean out my pores to give the tablets a bit of help. The facial was really good, and afterwards Sam, and salon owner Zoe (Preens), selected several samples for myself to take away and use to help my skin.

I am not normally very good at using samples, but I decided to give it ago because my skin had been really bugging me prior to. My acne can be quite painful. After a few days I could really see that keeping up a skincare routine helped to keep the acne at bay. A few nights I thought to myself, I really could not be bothered to wash my face over and over, but then I remembered what the results were and could not resists looking after my skin.

Because I had kept a good routine going with the samples, I decided the ones I really liked, and used the most I would purchased and I felt they would be a worthwhile investment having already proved to myself that I would use them religiously.

I feel the main reason I have continued to carry out a skincare routine is because I have made a routine to suit my life style. Mornings are a big no go, I am far from a morning person. So I look after my skin in between cleaning my teeth and bedtime. I also feel that the facial made a huge impact, as my skin was deep steamed & cleaned...and then any left overs were extracted, little bit painful but worth it. This meant that each night all I do is keep the pores clean but if I had not have had the facial, I would be cleaning my skin for the day to day impurities but the ones from prior to the routine would still be there, I am trying to word this with out making myself sound dirty.

My current evening routine

I start taking my makeup off with the Bodyshop camomile cleansing butter £12 (not pictured)
♥Then I wash my face with the Dermalogica foaming wash from the clear start range £13
♥Then I cleanse with my Clinque take the day off cleansing milk £19
♥Time to tone with the Dermalogica multi active toner, this is a spray mist instead of liquid, which is good for oily skin. £27
♥Then I moisturise with any moisturiser, as I have soo many samples to get through.
♥Then I apply the Dermagloica overnight treatment. £13
♥If need be I will apply the Dermalogica emergency spot fix. £13
In the mornings
♥I wash with the foaming wash
♥Cleanse with the Dermalogica ultrcalming cleanser £26.90
♥Apply the emergency spot fix if necessary
♥Any leftover eye makeup I remove with the Garnier Micellar water. £4.99

Once a week I will do a facemask, my favourite at the moment is the Origins clear improvement charcol mask. £23

New year, new me?

At the end of 2013 I remember thinking to myself how lucky I was to have such a normal year. To be happy and healthy with my amazing friends and family. I wished I could keep it the same.

Seeing in the new year last night I was happy to say I have had another wonderful year, and again, I wish for the same for 2015, and I am super excited for it!

So no new me, maybe some improvements - after all nobody is perfect.
